Seek

God is a Seeker, and He expects us to be seekers as well. He seeks worshippers (John 4:23) and the lost (Luke 19:10), and requires us to seek His kingdom, His righteousness (Matthew 6:33) and His peace (1 Peter 3:11).

Such seeking comes with a promise – if we seek, we shall find (Matthew 7:8).

Spiritual seeking should be our priority, our pursuit, and our practice. But seeking godly attributes comes with a warning: Don’t let the good you are seeking become the sole objective. Even good works can become idolatrous if they divert our attention from our true worship. Jesus Christ Himself should be our only Goal.

The prophet Amos clarifies this warning: “…This is what the Lord says to Israel: “Seek me and live; do not seek Bethel, do not go to Gilgal, do not journey to Beersheba…Seek the Lord and live…” (Amos 5:4-6).

God had revealed Himself to Jacob at Bethel, Joshua at Gilgal, and Abraham at Beersheba, but the shrines set up in these places had distracted the Israelites and had become their focus.

Their seeking had become misdirected. A past revelation of God had become more important to them than a present relationship with God.

We can fall into the same trap. We can be satisfied with stories of past encounters instead of being dissatisfied with our present knowledge of our Lord and Saviour.

Are we pressing on to know Christ better?

Are we seeking the God of blessing or only the blessing He promises?

Is Jesus our Focus and our Prize?
