Our Legacy #1

We Pass On What We Speak

We Pass On What We Speak

The principle of passing on is fundamental to life.

Our bodies are designed with the capacity to pass on who we are to the next generation. We are temporary stewards of an entrustment which we have received from the previous generation.

Our natural and spiritual legacy is dependent on our effective stewardship. But what does this look like?

Well, let me illustrate this from my own family. My five greats grandfather, Edward Gavey, was a French speaker. I have family letters, written in French, from the seventeenth century.

We pass on what we speak. Seven generations later I still speak some French.

When the people of Judah were in exile, their future depended on their ability to preserve their language. But the Bible says, “…in those days I saw men of Judah who had married women from Ashdod, Ammon and Moab. 24 Half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod or the language of one of the other peoples and did not know how to speak the language of Judah…” (Nehemiah 13:23-24).

They failed to steward their language.

Do we speak the language of faith?

Do we speak living words to the next generation?

Will we have Christian grandchildren?
